Philippines 2:7
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: KJV
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, NLB
One of the questions which I have often been asked is, "why did Jesus come in such a humble form?" I believe it was to point to the pride of mankind. It was an example of how God the Father wants everyone who comes to him to behave. Pride is man's biggest sin, bigger than any other sin. In his pride man is forever fighting up the latter of success and with that success come's the right to tell others who they are, what they have accomplished and what they have. When I asked a family member recently who has been very successful why he shopped at the most expensive stores he said that if you had made it, it was very important to let others know or what was the purpose of all the work and all the success if no one knew about it.
So this is pride at work, the idea of having others look and approve and maybe applaud. And yet this is what God the Father hates the most, the wanting to stand out from among the rest and the wanting to say "I am better then you and better then everyone around me." There can be a healthy pride which leads us to do better and there can be a pride in what others have done. But I believe that the pride that God hates is the one in which we feel as if we ourselves are God and no one can be at our level. This is the same pride that can never say "I am sorry for what I did." Kathrine Kuhlman use to say that the only person God cannot forgive is the one who can never say "I am sorry."
Pride starts out as a tiny seed which like all seeds grows as we accomplish more and more. When left unchecked it will in time destroy the person, the family, or even the whole company or community. The biggest sin in heaven has been the pride of satan who wanted to be like God. He is the one who said "I will be as God." Isiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
So even before man was created there was already sin in heaven when satan became prideful. When he was cast out of heaven to the earth below he bought this curse with him. God hated it then and he still hates it now. That's why it is the biggest of sins because it tries to make itself as God. The way God sees it you have nothing to be prideful of because it is God who has made all things and gives them to us freely. What you have accomplished has been done by grace and grace only, so why do you think yourself special?
So we have a paradox in that satan who was just an angel wanted to be God but that the Christ who was equal with the Father became like a man who is made of dust and has no power of his own. Jesus was the opposite of satan who craved power and might. Jesus was born a fragile human baby who had to be cared for while satan was trying to be king of the universe. The same is still happening today, those who really serve God are unknown while those who serve religion want to be famous and part of the elite which God condemns.
It is not hard to see the truth, just inspect the fruit you see in your pastor or mentor and measure it according to Mathew 18:1- At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
The Lord Jesus gave his followers a mandate and that mandate is that they were to be as he was in this world. They were to be servants and not think of themselves as better than others. When people start to get proud of their position or start thinking that they have something that no one else has they are committing the same sin as satan the deceiver. If it is done by an unbeliever it is just part of the world system and the classist society we live in. But when done by the born again believer it is a colossal sin.
Pride consists of many other negative traits like vanity, being conceited, being self-centered and being a narcissist which was the sin of satan who thought he was beautiful and very important. Ezekiel 28:17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor So I threw you to the earth; Be careful of the pride in your heart it is never too late to repent.
