The United Nations Organisation is an association of sovereign nations who are obliged by a charter to maintain international peace and security. It is the successor of the League of Nations. The UNO is the largest international organisation in the world. During the second World War, the then U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the then Prime minister of England Winsten Churchill met together and gave shape to the concept of the U.N.O. It was in 1941,that the Atlantic Chart was signed by the two leaders. The charter aimed at maintaining international peace and co-operation among nations.
Again they met at Tehran in Iran in 1943. The then ruler of Russia Joseph Stalin, also took part in the conference. They accepted the need for a medium to maintain international peace. The the Charter was formulated by the USA,in the former Soviet Unoin,the United Kingdom and China who met at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington DC in October 1944. The preamble of the Charter was formulated by Field Marshel Smuts. The representatives of 50 nations who met at San Francisco in USA signed the UN charter on 26 June 1945. This mainly wanted to ensure that no wars will be conducted in future.
On October 24, 1945, the UNO came into existence formally with the participation of the majority of the world nations including China, France,Britain,the erstwhile Soviet Union and the USA. October 24 is observed as the world UN Day every year.
