The United States has a 17 and a half trillion dollar foreign debt which is the highest in the world. England follows next with seven and a half trillion dollars, with most of Europe following close behind. These debts are much the same as your credit card debt which charge interest and must be paid up over a certain length of time. If a country defaults on its foreign or domestic debt it must restructure or lose the right to borrow from the international community. If it does not restructure, its economy would soon suffer and its currency would lose most of its value, leaving the people of that country with a bunch of worthless paper.
As individuals most of us also have personal debt which if we are responsible we are paying off on a monthly bases. Towns and cities, as well as counties and states also have debt which they must pay off. Even schools and companies carry debt which is how they can operate from year to year. But the biggest debt that we as citizens carry is our debt to a Holy God. Every time we sin, which is almost constantly, we are adding to our debt to the Most High.
Churches as well as countries, towns, cities, villages, and even family groups are all charged for missing the mark with God, which we call sin. The one thing we do not know is when our debt is due. The one thing we do know is that one day God will come calling to collect, and he will not be as easy going as the banks or other countries. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has not changed he is still the Holy God of old and his wrath is a terrible thing. Matthew 10:28, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. But he has provided us with a way of paying of our debt. This was done with the birth and death of Gods only begotten son Jesus Christ. With his death on the cross Jesus paid of our sins and sets us free from the wrath of God.
By missing the mark it is we who were supposed to die, Romans 6:23, for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus took our place on the cross because he knew we would never be able to go through this agonizing death. And God the Father made it easy for us to make things right with him by making it free of charge. Ephesians 2:8, For it is by grace you are saved through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. So God has done what no other entity would do, he has forgiven our debt to him and does not count it against us.
Now this gift is only to those who receive it by grace and put their faith in Jesus. Those who do not will one day be called to account and they will have to deal with God without the grace of Jesus. Countries as well as cities, providence's, towns or states will all have to give an account about what they did with Gods offer of mercy and grace. The end result for those who are not covered would be destruction and calamities on a scale which we have not yet seen. To our shame we have not taken the Father seriously in all this, but this does not mean that it will not happen. It will happen and it is now happening in some parts of the world.
Prisons in the world are full of men and women who thought they would never have to give an account for their bad deeds. In the natural world the law has no mercy and just because you thought you would never be caught did not mean you would live out your life with your ill-gotten gains. In the same way those who never ask Jesus for forgiveness will one day go behind bars for all eternity.
I spoke to a young man of twenty one about faith after he came to our house to fix some electrical problem we were having. He said that he had no faith and didn't need it, but he knew people who had it and they seemed happy with it. Then as he got into his truck to drive away I said "you don't need any money to have faith, it's free, just take it." He stopped dead in his tracks and thought about what I had just said and smiled. "You're right it is free, most things cost money or time, but this thing is free." With that he drove of and I knew he had just had a revelation from God about faith.
